The Gingerbread Buzz

On Wednesday, our local Walmart ran out of pre-assembled gingerbread house kits, 15 freaking days before Christmas. I had three kids and three options:

1. Purchase the "easily assembled" kits at Walmart that came with fourteen pounds of frosting, which I vowed last year I would never do again after finding dried frosting under the kitchen table days before Easter.

2. Drive my minivan across the street to Target and hope they were stocked up, with three tired kids, all of whom were sticky from the free candy canes that were passed out by the retired veteran at Walmart's entrance, "Welcome to Walmart."

3. Go home with three very disappointed children that were promised by their mother if they ate their dinner they would be rewarded with our annual tradition of decorating gingerbread houses.

"Let's just buy the ones that they have here at Walmart. That one." Jay pointed to the "easily assembled" kits in the seasonal candy aisle. "Want this. Want this one." Fifi pointed to the same kit and Lola begged me with her eyes. I shoved the kids and kits into my cart and hurried to the register.

But this year. THIS year I was smart. I captured it all on video as a friendly memo to myself to purchase the pre-assembled kits, the ones that come with 1/2 the frosting, before Thanksgiving 2009.

Because after devouring most of the frosting in the kit, the three kids... well... they were... a little buzzed. Stay tuned to the end...

That looked like my Punky the night we put up the tree! She was like a little tasmanian devil, running around like crazy! And thanks for the warning, I was thinking about getting one of those kits...guess I'll be waiting until my kids can hold their sugar. hehehehe

I love it! It's funny because when you told Jay no because his teeth would fall out, I was waiting for him to come back with, "Daddy can fix them" then at the end you put good thing Dad is a dentist!

Very cute!

We did gingerbread men, trees, and reindeer. I already had the cookie ingredients. My daughter and I bought the decorating supplies at the grocery store, I made the dough myself on the weekend, and the kids rolled it out and had fun with it on Monday evening. Now if I could just start my holiday shopping...

I just have to say, and I mean this in the nicest way....but talk about torture!! Putting a table full of candy and frosting and cookies in front of 3 little kids and then saying "don't eat any!". Kind of reminds me of when you put treat in front of a dog and then say "no". LOL!!!

Anyway, it was hilarious and I do have to give you credit for undertaking such a project. I have never built a gingerbread house, in my life! So sad! But I know my kiddos would love it so I probably should try at least once.

OHMommy -you are so cute! Love this - baby girl does a little jig to try to distract you from candy popping!!

shocking that your girls were the sneaky candy thieves. and there was precious little jay asking ever-so-quietly if he could have one. awwwwwww...

That Lola she is a negotiator. A lawyer in the making maybe? You're very brave, I'm not ready to attempt that with TOF until he's about 30.

LOL..that was so funny! Love the video. My husband bought Jonah a gingerbread house kit this past weekend at Target! We decided not to put it together during the week night for fear of the sugar rush-not-going-to-bed-until midnight factor! We'll be attempting it this weekend. Stay tuned! :)

I sooo needed this laugh today.I love the part where you say "because your teeth will fall out" You say it so calm and matter of fact like..it had me rolling..

GREAT job Oh.. I loved this.

So adorable! And I like that you spelled "NO" for her.

That is SO CRUEL. "here kiddies- here are BOWLS of CANDY and frosting...and NO ou can't eat it. You can decorate with it. Touch it. Smell it. But not EAT IT???

I can tell by the end of the video you caved. Good mommy. Good mommy.

I congratulate you on your lovely, well-behaved children. My kids would have put their heads in the bowl and slurped it all up like a puppy.

That was a truly great video. Thanks so much for sharing. The dancing at the end is classic.

I may now be banned from my favorite cafe since I was laughing so loud while enjoying this fabulous holiday tradition in the OHMommy house. Your kids are wonderful. Loved all the 'dancing' at the end, and end....

My daughter keeps making me watch this with her, so when you see 8 million views, it's just us. She thinks your kids are excellent. (I do, too)

Funniest thing ever. Fifi is so sneaky, Lola is a piece or work, Jay loves the CARMEN song Always has even as a baby.

Thankfully Bubs is NOT at the stage where we are building gingerbread houses! But your Wal-Mart story reminded me of when the first Wal-Mart was built in my small Montana hometown...the elderly gentleman they hired to "greet" customers would say "Welcome to Wal-Mart", but he managed to say it so it sounded like (and pardon the language) "Welcome to Wal-Mart...take a damn cart!"

:P

Your kids are the cutest...how could you not cave and let them eat the candy looking at those little faces!!

Happy Holidays!!

I'm thinking that we'll be assembling our gingerbread houses tonight, but it'll be me running around like crazy at the end. My alien child doesn't like candy that much. SO WEIRD.

Anonymous said...

Only you would've added the Sister Sledge and the "You'll shoot your eye out," disguised as teeth falling out. Haha. Loved Fifi sneaking the gum drops. And, at least you didn't pay the $260 for the Williams-Sonoma one.

My favorite part was the dog running through the chaos at the end... too classic! Thanks for being so willing to share with everyone... your daily diatribes bring a chuckle to my life.

HOW do you say no to those kids???? They are just TOO cute! I can barely stand it!
And Fifi trying to casually to pop another piece of candy in her mouth. AHHHHH!!!!!
So cute, those kids. :)

That was too fun! And, too funny!

I love "your teeth will fall out!"

I loved Fifi sneaking the candy and wow, that sure was nice of her to share it with Murphy!

Smart thinking to document it! Buy them quick next year...and just get a couple extra kits...just in case you forget the next year:)

That is hilarious! I liked, "Watch your head. Head. HEAD!"

Rhea said...

That was hilarious. Especially the end. And the head part under the table.

I was astonished you weren't going to let the kids have any candy...because it's pure torture to kids to handle candy, see it in front of them and not eat it.

But I see you allowed it in the end.

Lisa said...

we've never done those gingerbread houses. I'm remembering why now - although, if I could drink a glass of wine it might be a little fun!

Great video. Please tell Lola I love her spunk, as did my girls who mentioned that the girl on the computer was being a little sassy to her mama ;)

carrie said...

OMG, that was too funny! "No, no because your teeth will fall out!"

Yes, it is a good thing there is a dentist in the family because I don't know anyone who can make a gingerbread house without eating a little candy! :)

Including me.

Heather said...

LOL, and that my friend is why we NEVER do the gingerbread houses at all.

Megan said...

very funny... word of advice - and sanity saver --- the night before you do the decorating... use a hot glue gun to put the houses together (do this WITHOUT the kids!) This way the houses stay put and who the heck eats decorated houses that have been sitting out on the counter for weeks?! FUN!!!!!

kim-d said...

Is it wrong that I thought that was just hilarious. I especially loved Lola's "deer in the headlights" look when you busted her on the candy cane, and how quiet she suddenly got. Score ONE for OHMommy :)! And, Fifi, after being told "no eat" several times settled for dancing a little jig to Alvin & The Chipmunks. And while all of this was going on, I think Jay was figuring the mature, quiet approach would work best. They are so cute, I love that you share the videos with us!

Karen MEG said...

I LOVED that!!!! You are as cute as your kids, do you know that?

I must say, though, they showed amazing restraint... my girlie would have had the bowl of candy poised at her mouth :).

So what time did they actually get to BED?

(This video reaffirms that it was the best idea for me to sign up me and the girlie for the gingerbread house workshop at our local supermarket ... where she can freak out on the sugar with her BFF and hopefully pass out in the car on the way home... let's keep our fingers crossed ....)

This is so funny! My pookie did the same thing Lola did by saying I said something I did not say. She just started this. Kids and sugar are so funny. I was sad because Linens and Things used to sell the pre-made ones then we would buy the soft frosting for a dollar. I cannot find the pre-made ones any where.

mwshores@bellsouth.net

P.S. I found a HS friend and two childhood friends and we all still live close so we are going out for lunch after the holidays. I love FB.

They have PREassembled kits?! This is exactly why we haven't done one this year. Last year we tried, but Isobel's dad wouldn't let her do it, since he was concerned about her wrecking his gingerbread train. Kids.

Oh my word! That is hilarious. I love the self-control that they exhibit and then at the end, the total unleashing of self-control!

OMG I love it. That will totally be me tomorrow - I promised the kids we'd do one and I have to go out early in the morning and buy a kit. I'm scared of the gingerbread buzz too :-)

p.s. Adorable video, as always :-)

Note to self to exclude 1/2 of the frosting right out of the box along with maybe 1/4 of the candies.
