Cooking in leotards with Lola: Part 2 (Stuffed Cabbage)

OHmommy's most famous, easy-to-cook, Polish stuffed cabbage or Golabki!!!

Ingredients: Cabbage, white rice, meatloaf spices, 1 lb of ground beef, 1/2 lb of ground pork, 1/4 lb of ground veal, tomato sauce (or family size can of tomato soup), and one egg.

First step is to add some water to two pots. One for the rice. One for the cabbage. Have mommy boil the water on the stove. The stooooooove is hot! Make sure mommy checks on the cabbage cuz it shouldn't be too floopy. It should be just a little sweaty.

Next you take the three meats and egg and spices and mix them all together. Ewwww... slimy. My hands are yucky.

It is much better to use a smasher to mush up the not cooked meats for me. (OHmommy says... prepare meat mixture exactly how you prepare meatloaf for your family. Essentially stuffed cabbage is meatloaf with rice, wrapped in cabbage, and cooked in tomato sauce)

When you are done smashing the meat, rice should be done cooking. Add rice to the mushed up meat and make sure it's half not-cooked meat and half cooked-up rice. It should be equal. Fair. The meat and rice won't argue when they cook because they are fair and equal. Right, Mama?

When the cabbage is sweaty you can chop off each leaf. Now it's time to scoop up the meat and rice and ploop a spoon full in the middle of each cabbage leaf.

Rolling time. Rooooooll. Rooooll. RRRRRRRRoll and tuck and tuck and roll. (OHmommy says... gently swaddle the leaf around the meat/rice mixture just like you swaddle a newborn in a blanket)

OHmommy's roll on the left. Lola's roll on the right.

Put all the finished rolled cabbages into one pot. Add the sauce and cook. (OHmommy says... mix one can of soup and one can of water in separate bowl and pour over the rolls. Make sure the rolls are 1/2 submerged in liquid. Cook for two hours at 350 degrees.)

Smacznego! Or Bon Appetit! Or yummy yummy there's a party in my tummmmmmy!

(OHmommy says... if you like tomatoes add one can of stewed tomatoes before cooking. If you dislike tomatoes substitute the tomato soup with cream of mushroom and it's equally as delicious)

Cooking in Leotards with Lola: Part 1 (Chicken Kiev) can be found here. Why cooking in leotards? Lola's gymnastics school is located very close to our farmer's market and my little chef is always too anxious to cook and doesn't wait to change. Makes sense now, no?

Who doesn't cook in their leotards? She did a fabulous job!

Can you sound the name out for me?

My mom makes that, and she always called them (phonetically) gwump-kies? My mom wronged me! And she's like half polish.

Those were always my requests for my birthday meals.

OHmommy said...

Krystyn... your mom was right. It does sound like

gwump-kies

or go-wump-key

I love that she's so excited to cook with you that she doesn't want to change. She's adorable. And what a fun, mother-daughter, bonding time.

This looks delish! When I get into my new house and I have a nice kitchen, I totally want to make this! Great pictures too!

I might just have to try this recipe out for my Polish (well, half Polish) husband.

And I would be thrilled with cooking in leotards, since my daughter's preferance is cooking nudie (with underwear, of course, but still...). It can get hot in the kitchen after all.

I've been cooking more and more for - and with my family. I'm so excited to try out this recipe!

I've never had stuffed cabbage before...you think it would taste good with turkey instead of meat/pork? You're girl is cute!

If she had dark hair those pics could be be with my Busia 25 years ago! This is one of the few Polish dishes I like but I've never made it as an adult. Despite being half Polish I'm not a big fan of the traditional food; but this might be on a future menu at home

I love this post. I am starting a new thing in our house this weekend: we've decided to spend a little time each weekend looking through our cookbooks and choosing two new recipes to try during the week. Then we can make sure that on the shopping trip, we get the ingredients for them. The children will choose (we have lots of glossy cookbooks with color photos) and help cook, on precisely this notion that if we can get them to take ownership of the foods, they will try more new things. I also have big plans for a small herb/vegggie container garden this summer, to encourage their experimentation with new flavors. I love that Lola knows all the steps to make this dish herself.

What a fun thing to make! Stuffed cabbage is one of the few things I have not made--we should try it. I can't eat beef but maybe a turkey or pork mixture?
She is a very cute helper!

She almost makes me want to cook in a leotard. Almost ;)

Looks like a fun alternative to meatloaf to try!

MMMMM, looks yummy, and you have a cute little helper too.

I made cooked cabbage the other day and 2 of my 3 boys LOVED it so I bet they would eat this.

Ed said...

Yum! OK--If I'm not too sure about the tomato soup (or cream of mushroom) what else would you suggest? The green of the cabbage is very appetizing.

I admit - this recipe kind of scares me. The combination is something I've never tried before (esp adding the soup and cabbage). This is one of those things I'd rather try at a friend's house lol.

It does sound interesting though!

LOVE LOVE LOVE stuffed cabbage!

That is how my mom cooks it.

My husband's father is polish. His mom cooks *gwumpkies* by baking them in the oven with a slice of bacon on top and no tomatoes. It is definitely my favorite meal she cooks!

Anyway, Lola is too cute cooking in her leotard!

Ash said...

Yum, that sounds really good! I can actually smell it cooking, I need to eat breakfast! Lola is too cute!

Sounds good! What an adorable assistant you have.

I've baked with my kids A LOT, but the closest to cooking is make your own pizza. Even then, they want to pick off the vegetable faces before they eat it!

Looks yummy! It's been a hundred years since I've had stuffed cabbage. I'm going to have to give it a go!

I'd take "Cooking in Leotards with Lola" over Rachel Ray any day. What a cute little cook!

Ok, I don't enjoy stuffed cabbage, but I would definitely try it again if it were served to me by such a sweet chef!

I am going to try this soon. Thanks for the suggestion. I always forget to make it. Mike's mom makes it quite often and we are lucky enough to mooch. Good stuff!

Although I am half-Swedish, half Scottish, I dearly love Polish/Slovak food and halupki is one of my favorites; haluski being the other! My piggies need some help but I can toss a mean dish of haluski together -just made some for supper earlier this week and my son and I both loaded up on that then! The little grandson here and his slightly older sister are little fuss-budgets with food though -won't touch cooked cabbage, neither of them. So I have to try to plan meals like these two when I know my son will be here to help eat the pot full I'd have since I cook them like I'm cooking for a small army! I'm wondering how well the piggies would do in the freezer though -for a later date? Any suggestions on that?
Now that you've made me hungry for this, if this idea is still with me tomorrow, this might just make its way to my dinner table on Sunday! Or soon anyway.

I do the same thing with Z - trying to get her to help in every way she can while I cook and bake. It definitely gets her more interested in trying foods, even if they're (gasp) mixed together!

Marinka said...

I never made this but I can't wait to try. When is Lola available to help?

Anonymous said...

I am so excited to try this-- I've been trying to find an easy recipe for cabbage rolls, they are tradition in my family! But my Gram's recipe is WAY too long & difficult. I think this one will be JUST right! YAY!

Thanks, Ms. Lola ;)

I totally love stuffed cabbage and stuffed peppers, but my Hunny had an unfortunate accident involving stuffed peppers and his mother as a child (don't ever make your child eat their stuffed peppers for breakfast ... and lunch ... the day after the meal). So I'm not allowed to make them. *sigh* I'll admire yours from a distance.

The first dress is lacking a hem to be complete!

Brett made these in the fall - but no tomato sauce...I'm gonna make these and knock his socks off I'll bet! Even better since I'm really trying to stick to a weekly "menu" instead of last minute trips to Papa Murphy's pizza! Thank you so much!

Maybe I'll even wear my leotard when I do...wait, I don't have one of those any more. Darn!

I make stuffed cabbage once a month!! My baba made it for my mother, and she- of course- made it for all of us.

We call it Pigs in a blanket. Now I'm hungry for it!!

of course, I don't look as adorable as Lola when I cook it!!!
