The Great Gene Payback

"I need new jeans, Mama." Nearly five-year-old Lola stood before me.

"Why? They look fine."

"Look. Look here, they are TOO tight. They hurt me."

"Oh." I examined the relatively new pair of jeans on her and they were in fact tight.

"See, Mama. I need new jeans."

"Your birthday is two weeks away, let's wait. Okay, Gorgeous?"

"Okay, Mama. Size five because the sunshine in Mexico made me grow!" She squealed at the fact that she had outgrown her jeans and was ready for the next size up. The physical proof was a sign that she was growing up.

"Okay, size five. You are growing up so fast. Please stop. Soon I will be able to look you in the eyes."

"Remember I need a size five now."

"Yes."

"I'm really growing up, Mama!!! I reeeeeally am."

She giggled. Then frowned.

"But, Mama..."

"What, Gorgeous?"

"Your jeans are waaaaaaaaay too tight." She stressed the WAY waaaaaay too long.

"And. Mama."

"Yes. Lola."

"You need a new pair too."

Heh. Daughters. My own mother did warn me. "One day you'll have a daughter and she will pay you back."

That was great! Thanks for the giggle. Soon enough she will understand.

Um, yeah. My 3 year old son tells me the same thing... Great jeans, btw!

Great title for the post. She's in size 5 already? Kyle's legs are sooo stubby. Just starting to wear 4's.

I love your jeans, and unfortunately can understand. Although, my little offspring usually comments on my "crazy hair" needing a trim. Love this post!

Love the jeans and the shoes! Don't feel bad my 4 year old told me I was getting big yesterday! He doesn't know yet that I am big because I am pregnant. LOL

That is such a cute story. Kids really do have a knack with telling it exactly the way they see things, don't they?

Rhea said...

I love it when my kids have fashion advice.

One of the latest was from my 7 yr old, "Mama, you look ugly when you throw up."

Thanks.

Insult to injury there.

And I agree with Indy, great post title.

I mean - sounds like a day for shopping for the 2 classy ladies! fun post...

ahh, the skinny leg jean-wish I could wear them but alas there are some of us with huge feet that the skinny jean does nothing for! But I can admire how you can wear them.

Enjoy shopping for your Lola. The Chicken may need to go to the juniors. Kid's size. 14 in length is getting too short but they swim on her waist.

Hahha-too cute!
And geez, what is up with the very fast growing of daughters!
BOTH of mine grow faster than I can keep up with!

I feel like all I ever do is buy jeans and shirts and coats and shoes. My kids are always a year or two behind on jeans--not the length (they look like they are in capris) but the dang width. I buy slim and the jeans still fall to their knees. The girls knows to wear the jeans and roll the waist band but my boys just let the pants fall down! Not very classy ;)

It blows my mind how quickly they advance from one size to the next. It's almost magical. Frustrating, but magical. (And not nearly as frustrating as when *I* advance from one size to the next.)

I love this. Too funny.

Okay, I must ask. Tell me what those jeans are. I am in love with the cut and the color already. Please, please tell me.

Katie said...

SO true, My mom continues to tell me that almost daily! ;) I'm kinda worried when Miss Em is a teenager. ;)

Anonymous said...

Were you in fact wearing those when she commented?

I just bought Missy B her first pair of 7's a few weeks ago. She hasn't the slightest what she is wearing.

Karen MEG said...

Excellent excuse to get yourself another pair, don'tcha think ;)?
She's such a doll...

(I love the skinnies, though, you wear them well :)

OMG So funny!!!! She is too much :-) I have a little Thing turning five a couple days before her . . . he is also just getting into his size 5 jeans. Soon Lola will realize how lucky she is to have a fabulous mommy who can pull off wearing hawt jeans!!

Rachel said...

pardon me while I laugh myself silly ;-)
I love when Princess gets so excited because she's grown out of something. She loves to puff up and say: "look how big I am!" It makes me happy and sad all at once

I am rolling at her comment to you ;-) A fashionista in the making, just like momma ;-) MWAH

Oh, momma! You got to tell that girl. Momma's jeans are never TOO tight - they're JUST RIGHT!

Becca said...

Ha, too cute! When I found out I was having another girl, both of my parents just laughed and said it was time for payback.

By the way- those jeans are fabulous!

Courtney said...

How cute! When is Lola's birthday? Taylor will be 5 in April.

Kelly said...

Honestly, I'm excited for my daughter to tell me those things! I can't tell my mom that her things are SOOOOO out of style, she's the kind of person who
A) Wouldn't listen
B) Would be incredibly insulted and assume I was wrong anyway

I will be happy to have that relationship with my daughter!!!!

That is too funny! Aren't girls fun?

Izzy told me I needed to brush my hair one day when I had scrunched and styled it. Thanks! She was probably right, though.

Kari said...

Funny, funny girl! I am not looking forward to the payback I will have to endure with my two!! And, unless the sunshine in Mexico made you grow, too, I wouldn't worry about getting YOU a new pair...LOVE THOSE SKINNY JEANS.

Ellyn said...

They grow too fast.

Dear lord... I can't imagine what my stepdaughter thinks of mine... and not because skinny jeans are the style... but because any jeans look that tight on me!!!

Kate Coveny Hood said...

You can remind her of this conversation when she is a teenager and has to lie down on her bed to get those tight jeans buttoned (remember those days?)

Lil rugrats. ;) According to Justin, I don't look so great in dresses. Nice...

Ah I would love a pair of skinny jeans, however I am NOT skinny. such an annoying technicality!

your daughter, btw, is hilarious.

Momisodes said...

LOL. I've heard that as well, and I'm bracing myself :)

LOVE those jeans.

At least she doesn't fit in your clothes yet. My daughter treats my closet like her personal boutique she can shop from.

I do NOT like...

Ha, funny story, my son once told me my jeans were too tight on my butt! Out of the mouths of babes!

CC said...

Cruel, cruel. At least she tells you when she really needs new clothes. My son declares he needs size 6 when he still barely fits into his size 5. Shopping? I don't think so.

oh my gosh- that is precious. what a cutie.

and i LOVE that you call her gorgeous. really - i think that's just awesome and will give her a lot of confidence.

That's sur to be a story to remember. Kids say ANYTHING that comes to their minds!

My 4yo is wearing a 5 now because she is so tall. And she LOVES that fact that I keep telling her she is just growing up too fast.

Hailey said...

I am so behind in reading posts so that is why I am just now commenting.
Ever since you first posted this picture, I have wanted to know what kind of jeans they are. I need some skinnies.

Michele said...

I love your jeans. She is precious. I had a similar situation with Sarah the other day. I was sitting watching something on TV and Sarah wanted my full attention. "Mommy you always watch Tv." She is actually wrong. I hardly ever watch it because I am constantly doing things. It is so funny how they want to point things out from tight jeans to too much tv. Kids they are so much fun and a barrel of laughs!

Rach (Mommy Learns to Blog) said...

Too funny!

Love the jeans. Did you bother explaining fashion or did you just let it go?

Just wait until she WANTS tight jeans and Mommy is having a fit!

Rach (Mommy Learns to Blog) said...

I'm sorry in advance if this posts twice - I don't think my original comment went through.

Love the blog title. Love the story. Love the jeans and shoes.

And mostly, LOVE the fact that before you know it, she'll WANT "tight" jeans of her own and you'll be in for such a good time as a mom!
