PSA: Chardonnay doesn't belong in sippy cups.

Let's start with the moral of this post today. Take care of yourselves and don't wait until you are in dire straights to seek medical care.

For weeks I have been complaining about my eyes. "They are so itchy." I whined a number of times. "It's allergy season." More then one person replied. "My eye lids are so heavy." I admitted on several occasions. "You need to get more sleep." Many people encouraged me. "I feel like someone is pulling my eyeballs back." I cried. "Time to change your contacts."

I self medicated myself for seasonal allergies, invested in new contacts, got several nights of uninterrupted sleep and on Monday I googled my symptoms.

"Heavy, itchy, red eyes, eyeballs, eyelids, spasms, omgimdying, twitching, pain, hurtssomuchiwanttojumpoutofmywindow"

And low and behold WebMD came through and identified my problems as either a spinal legion, MS, or crack overdose. SO. I immediately called the Cleveland Clinic. "My eyeballs are on fire and before I jump out the window in pain I was wondering if you could squeeze me in. Immediately. Dr. Google says I might have a spinal legion which is affecting my eyeball nerve. My eye won't stop twitching."

Unable to drive, I forced my husband to cancel all of his dental patients and we drove down to the Cole Eye Institute, my eyes wrapped in my son's T-shirt to drown out the sun shine.

"Hee. Hee. Hee. HOOO. I think I might be dying. Hee. Hee. Hee. HOOOO. What will you do without me? Hee. Hee. Hee. HOOOO. Will you remarry?" Hee. Hee. Hee. HOOO!!!! I think you should, but always have a photo of me, okay? Hee. Hee...." I tried to speak in between my Lamaze breathing.

At the clinic, my handsome doctor, after a gazillion questions took one look at my eyes and asked "Do you top off?" Confused, I shrugged my shoulders and wondered how long it would take to get some drugs. "Do you top off with your solution? Just add more to the existing case instead of cleaning it out? Do you top off, at night?"

"Um. Yeah. Of course! I am a busy mom of three."

He shook his head and explained that for weeks I have been lovingly growing nasty bacteria in my contact case, like some bad high-school biology experiment. "But, I just put new contacts in. They're two days old. Just give me some drugs and I will be out of your hair" He explained that even though they were new they were placed in the topped-off solution that was rapidly growing bacteria faster then the Brangelinas were populating the world.

And so. For weeks I have been using my eyes as petri dishes and have been growing bacteria at remarkable speeds. Mr. Heiken, my freshmen biology teacher would be proud.

You know you have a serious infection when one of the top hospitals in the world requires a follow up appointment the next day. And the next. And the next. And you find yourself best friends with the door man by Friday morning. Furthermore, you know you have a serious eye infection when you require three separate eye drops every hour on the hour, even throughout the night, into your petri dishes eyes. More so your husband finds it hard to sleep while you scream in pain as the ice cold drops meet your burning eyes at 1am, 2am, 3am, 4am.... If pink eye was a pesky catfish then my eye infection was a stubborn whale refusing to budge.

After the my first follow up on Tuesday I called my mother for help. The first time in nearly seven years of motherhood I cried over the phone begging for some assistance, "Get on a plane. I can't see what I poured into Fifi's sippy cup. Organic lemonade or Saturday's night Chardonnay. I. Need. Help." She must have heard the panic in my voice and flew out on the very next flight relieving my husband of further investigation about his second wife, surely the eye infection would kill me.

She has been a blessing. Others have been too. She drove me to get glasses. She drove and picked up Lola from preschool twice. She sent me a fruit bouquet at home because I tweeted my symptoms.

I am praying that my eyes have stopped growing bacteria by Friday and we can begin steroid treatment to kill and treat. We are unsure if I have permanently damaged my eye sight. The meds that I am on right now have my pupils dilated around the clock and I can't handle any light source. I am unable to drive. Or read and blog. Or handle watching TV without squinting and swearing. How are the new Housewives of New Jersey? Any favorites?

I'm not seeking any sympathy. Quite the opposite... I want to use my stupidity and set an example of what happens when you don't take care of yourself. Seek medical attention immediately. Take care of your medical needs like you take care of your childrens. They do not deserve Chardonnay in their sippy cups with their morning waffles.

Now turn down your lights. It's killing me. And please, whatever you do, don't tell my mother I was on the computer while she was grocery shopping with three wild kids. I heard it took them 11 minutes to pick out the shopping cart.

****

My doctor advised that I buy a new contact case each month and clean it everyday. 1 in 1000 contact wearers develop an infection. That numbers increases 10 fold when contact cases aren't clean. I am so glad I am making a difference in the world, through my laziness studipty.

Oh my goodness! I do hope your eyes start feeling better really, really soon. I'm so glad you went to the Dr. when you did - I'm sure the fact that you're on so many eye drops will treat this, and your eye sight will be fine. Thank God your mom is there to help you out.

Aack! My eyes are burning just reading this post. I am pretty good about throwing away my case, as soon as it starts to get a little crusty, yeah that probably isn't soon enough. I don't top off, I dump, so maybe that is enough to balance out the crusty case. And I change to new contacts every 2, ok 3, at the most 4 weeks.
So, what did your doctor say about how often to clean your case and how to prevent that nastiness? Oh, who am I kidding, I am not going to clean ONE MORE THING. I am going to go buy 10 new cases.
Hope you can see soon. I miss you!

Yikes! How scary. I really hope your eyes are ok in the long run.

I have two words for you:

- DAILY DISPOSABLES. I had them before I had Lasik 8 years ago and they were awesome. Wear 'em one day and throw them away. No worry about cleaning contact cases, etc.

Thank goodness for your mom and good friends. I hope you feel better soon.

I literally cried out when you mentioned RHONJ because I, as a busy and single mom TOTALLY FORGOT TO SET THE DVR TO GET TONIGHTS EPISODE. It was going to be my special treat to myself. Boo hoo.

On a side note, if I lived nearby I'd be the one that loaned you my swanky new Chanels and donned some shades as well while we sipped champagne.

Lesson learned...I am so sorry this is happening to you! I don't top off but I cleaning my lens case is really rinsing with tap water twice a year! Perhaps it's the air drying of the case that has saved my sight so far.

Take CARE!

Good heavens, woman! I have pink eye right now, but my doctor didn't even believe me. I wanted to scream, "I have three small children and we have had our share of pinkeye. I know when I've got it, and I've got it." But now I feel guilty I got the catfish and you got the whale. Wow, I hope all gets better soon, and I'm SO glad your mom could come to help.

i have similar things happen to my eyes--especially with protein build-up and during the spring time when allergies get bad. i'm on drops right now to clear up the reaction to pollen and similar "daily care" issues. i also used to just put new solution in, and then my optometrist started having me use something called "clear care," which has a special cleaning kit and solution to get rid of proteins and other build up on my contacts. eventually, i want to get Lasik just so i don't have to deal with all of this!

Ed said...

Bummer! I just got contacts--hopefully this will never be an issue. I got the dailies. Wear once and throw them away. Fresh pair each day.

Mommycosm said...

Oh - I wish I couldn't relate, but I SO feel your pain. It totally sucks.

I had an allergic reaction to my contacts last year. Totally random after wearing them since I was 14. The ER doc described the surface of my eye as "road rash". He offered serious pain meds at the hospital and I didn't take it because they put a numbing solution in my eye- idiot. I was begging for it in the morning.

You're probably not going to like hearing this - but I wear my glasses about 90% of the time now. I upgraded to a pair I don't totally hate. It's better than being in pain and blind. I can only tolerate my contacts for a couple of hours at a time :(

Irene said...

Oh, I am so sorry!!! I use Clear Care too which uses a new case with every bottle. But before that, I used the same case for YEARS!! Yikes! I will never do that again!!!

Guru Louise said...

That blows. The other lesson here is knowing when to ask for help! Good for you for calling your mom...

This winter baby Jane and I both got a stomach virus and I kept breastfeeding through it to keep her hydrated. However, I couldn't keep any fluids down. I waited so long to take care of myself that I passed out from dehydration and smacked my head on the bathroom sink. So stupid of me. I had to spend the whole night in the ER getting hydrated and waiting for a CAT scan.

You are a good mom for always putting your needs second...but when you get sick you gotta take of yourself. Get well soon!

Ouch ouch ouch!!! Here's hoping you feel better soon, and have no lingering damage. Egads. I've had some nasty cases of pink eye that were hell to get through, so I can only imagine how worse this is for you.

I had to giggle though at your Lamaze breathing. I do that too, when I'm hurting or just really stressed!! Hey, whatever works, right?

I have never heard of something like this. Thanks for spreading the word to all of us contact wearing moms. I will think of you every time I clean my contact case from now on. Your mom is awesome - on the verge of saintly, huh? Sounds like hubby isn't too bad either. Take it easy and I'm right around the corner if you need anything. Seriously.

Stephanie said...

I never clean my case but I do pour out the solution and usually rinse it out. Thanks for the reminder, I've been lucky enough to avoid an infection, but nothing major's happened in a while. I'm due for a visit from murphy soon!

Hang in there, babe! And get some sunglasses...or something. ;oD

Man, that sux! I wore contacts A LOT, but had tons of problems with light sensitivity and all. So now, I wear my glasses all the time. Whenever I really really wanna wear contacts, I got one a day disposable ones. And because I work in a research lab, I always worry I'm gonna get something in my eyes, so glasses are the way to go! I only wear contacts if I'm babysitting small babies or going out. Because in both cases I have people taking off my glasses - very annoying :)

Oh no- another thing for me to obsess about now.. I had no idea you could get an infection from that! My contacts have been in a case in my purse for a week... is that bad? Feel better- glad your mom is there to help... kinda nice, isn't it? I mean, minus the eyeball scorching infection LOL!

Tyne said...

Wow! Thanks for informing us of your condition- I have new lens care techniques thanks to you!

Laura said...

Oh my - I did the same thing with my contacts....oh I hope you feel better soon.

take care!

Amy said...

Holy holy holy crap!!!!!! That is unbelievable!

I've worn contacts since I was 12. I actually never top off - every night I dump the solution and fill up with new. Three times I've gotten up in the morning and opened the case and dumped it - only to realize MY CONTACTS WERE IN THERE and I'd just poured them down the sink. (I'm not a morning person.)

However - I am not good about cleaning the case. So I'm buying bulk extra cases today and those suckers are going in the dishwasher between uses.

Now my eyes have sympathy hurt. I'm so sorry and I really hope you haven't damaged anything.

AreWeThereYet? said...

Did you know that I lost my vision for 2 weeks in college due to problems with contacts? Could never wear them again.

Had to be in darkness for 2 weeks. No driving. No TV. Lots of Radio (this was before IPods)...

Drops like you, plus I had to rub ointments on my eyeballs. That was hideous!

Did have worsened sight and chronic dry eye for a few years afterwards. Then it slowly became OK. I was legally blind tho. Absolutely required my glasses.

Lasik made it all better.
Changed my life forever.

Please take care of your yourself! Your eyes are your lifeline!

Your post today has made my day. Is that wrong? My husband and I have argued since marriage (because we never spent night then morning together before marriage, Mom) about contact solution. Thank goodness you felt the urgency to go to the doctor. Many of us feel that we shouldn't worry about ourselves as much as we worry about our loved ones - we assume that whatever is hurting or aching will go away. I am so glad that your doctor knew what was wrong and felt the same urgency to treat you and see you often, to make sure his treatment was effective. Wishing you a speedy recovery (and be sure to hug your mom a thank-you, what a great mom you must have!)
