"Jesus, Mary, & Joseph... she is choking!"

I spent my entire Friday night doing this....
I re-organized our playroom/computer room. I threw out 2 kitchen sized garbage bags of toys. Mismatched toys that I consider to be choking hazards. Tiny little wheels that broke off of a matchbox car, little swords from warriors and knights, tiny pink high heels from Polly Pockets. All the other choking hazard toys I placed in plastic bins and stored them up high in the closet. I went to sleep so proud of my accomplishment and crossed "baby proofing the playroom" off of my now growing to do list. Check!

A mere 12 hours later.... "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. CALL 9-1-1!!!!!!!! CALL IT NOW!" I sweep Fifi off of the playroom floor.

I flip Fifi over and administer 5 powerful blows to her back. She is foaming at the mouth. My arms are growing weaker and I am trembling with fear. I place my finger in her mouth and can not find anything.

"CALL 9-1-1. She is choking. She is REALLY CHOKING! Oh my god. She is choking!" I start crying. Fifi is half crying with her eyes closed and I can feel her giving up. I can feel her getting weaker and limper by the second. The seconds are so long. I keep flipping her over and administering the powerful blows on her back. 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 -5 - flip over to check for anything in her mouth. Nothing! Seconds going by so slow.

The paramedics arrive four minutes later. She looks up at them and swallows. I have 5 paramedics standing in my kitchen and I can barely catch my breath. Whatever she swallowed will make it's way out. We have to monitor her for fever, air in lungs, and should anything seem odd call them again because a baby can easily develop pneumonia.

I need a vacation away from motherhood, just for a weekend.

Wow...I got choked up (no pun intended) just reading this. I can't even imagine how scary this was for you. I hope she passed whatever it was easily and has no other symptoms. You poor mommy! Get yourself some valium and have a glass of wine (or four)!

oh my god! ((hugs))choking is the scariest thing ever! how ironic - after you cleaned house of the bits and pieces, too!

is that the first time you've had to call 911? we've done so twice and at least that many ER visits. take care of yourself...i know it takes FOREVER to get over stuff like that!

Thanks girls.

What a morning. She is fine. I don't know what she swallowed. I seriously spent hours cleaning out the room. I probably should have cleaned the carpet too.

By the way - do you see the snow our deck? Yes. It. Is. Snowing.

I just happened upon your blog - it's great! The choking incident sounds so awful - I've had one myself with my 1-year old - not as bad though. On a lighter note, can I tell you what caught my eye about this post? Your title - My mom said J, M & J the entire time I grew up and I always thought (before I actually THOUGHT about it) that she was saying "Jesus Marion Joseph" - Nope - didn't really make that connection for way longer than I should have. Anyhow, you brought back some memories for me. Hope your little one is well now.

OMG, that was horrendous! Hope Fifi is OK now! I swear, it's amazing that us parents survive watching our kids live through their childhood. That was SOOOO scary!
Hope your heart is now safely back where it belongs.

How absolutely terrifying! I'm reading your blog for the first time today, courtesy of a link from huckdoll, and I'll definitely be back to see how Fifi is doing. I hope the remainder of your year is far less stressful than choking infants and dislocated elbows.

Stress-relieving martini, anyone?

Oh, that is so scary!
My daughter choked on grapes when she was 1 1/2. (Yes, they were cut up.) I had her flipped over and was unsuccessfully trying to administer blows. Luckily, my husband came in, grabbed her and gave her a big WHACK and they came out. She was blue. There was NO air going in. No time for 911. Terrifying!
Afterwards, I just sat on the floor and cried with her. Reading your post just brought it all back...she's 5 now.

Oh my gosh, that is so, so scary. I'm so glad she was o.k. and I completely admire you for holding it together enough to do the CPR. I'm so glad she is o.k.
