"The Easter bunny isn't HUMAN."

"The Easter bunny is not real, I know." Jay declared three days before Easter Sunday. I asked him how he knew that the Easter bunny was not real.

"Because there is so much snow on the ground. How can he hop around in the piles of snow?" True I tell him. There IS snow piled on the ground (second year in a row) and that would make it hard for him to hop.

Jay continued, ".... and the Easter bunny is not HUMAN. I know Target doesn't let non-humans shop. How can the Easter bunny shop for jelly beans and chocolate at Target?" True I tell him. Target doesn't allow non-humans to shop.

I sat Jay down and whispered in his ears that the Easter bunny was not real and that it was actually Mama who stuffed the baskets. Furthermore, I explained to him that I will continue stuffing HIS basket if he kept it a secret from his sisters.

"Deal." He smiled. "Can you make sure you remember to stuff some Legos in my basket?"

"Deal." We shooked hands. I expected him to ask me about Santa, the Tooth fairy, angels, and/or whether or not Darth Vader was real. But he didn't. We will cross that bridge later. For now, my first born, no longer believes in the Easter bunny. Which officially means that he is growing up.

Which in turn, means I am officially getting older too. Happy Easter to me!

LOVE the new pics and the matching dresses. I'm so excited to do that with my little beans next year!

We chose not to do Santa or the Easter Bunny or things like that with our kiddos, but now that I've read your post, I'm even more glad cause I don't WANT to know when they're growing up (or I'm getting older!). I'll be perfectly happy to live in oblivion until they graduate high school. ;oD Seriously, the pics are adorable. I'm out of commission for a few days due to our move, but I'll be checking back in later this week. Have a great week!!!

Oh I LOVE these pictures!! And I am actually kinda sad for you that jay doesn't believe in the Easter Bunny. Here's hoping he believes in Santa and the Tooth Fairy for a long while. It's just another step in growing up, and I don't want them to grow up!

LunaNik said...

Judging from the pics, not only do you have beautiful children, but you also have a beautiful home! Those curtains...GORGEOUS!

Just something to think about: Although my mother came clean about the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc., she would NEVER admit that Santa wasn't real. Never. She continued to wait until we fell asleep to put our presents under the tree on Christmas Eve and signed them from Santa, until we all moved out. True story. It was in this way that my mom managed to keep the magic of Christmas alive...even for a bunch of ungrateful teenagers.

Wow...so what exactly did my comment have to do with the Easter Bunny anyway???? Hope your day was lovely. Mwah.

It's always a little hard when the oldest and youngest no longer believe. *sigh* The good thing about the older ones knowing 'the real deal', you now have an ally! The photos are beautiful--as always! Happy Easter!

Love the pictures, and those DRESSES! Oh my gosh, so adorable.

MommyTime said...

Well, at least it's only a little step he's made. And even when the Truth comes out, there are still so many ways we can make magic for our children.

I adore that last picture of Fifi falling and Jay and Lola looking so surprised!

Such cute pictures! Love the dresses!!

You were wearing the matching mommy dress, right? Below the knee floral, of course :)

Amy said...

I would LIE about Santa, seriously!

They look so cute. Hope you had great day! =)

Cute pics. That is the deal I make with my children as they get older. Keep the secret and you still get a basket, stocking, presents ,etc. If you tell or don't "believe" you don't get to reap the rewards.

Smart boy! Santa still may have pass, you know being human and having a workshop with elves to build all his own toys (no need for Target) and duh, he has a sled for the snow, he is quite prepared.
The kids are adorable, as usual. I love the cute little dresses. And Jay looks so handsome.
I teach Sunday school and today one of the moms actually said "He ate a whole chocolate bunny for breakfast, haha" as she dropped of her child and RAN to the service. fun!

Zoeyjane said...

OMG, the matching dresses are to DIE for.

The Easter bunny brought my girls new shoes to wear for easter. He got the size wrong for Belle. She was SO devastated.
"The Easter Bunny KNOWS I grew. (sob) How come my shoes don't fit!"
It was a dramatic morning without pre-church pictures.

Your family and pictures are gorgeous. I love the lighting.

Oh, gosh. Could this be any more darling? Um, no.

And, what? The Easter Bunny isn't real? Darn it.

Mr Lady said...

My 8 and 10 year olds still believe in the bunny, in the fairy, in santa, in all of it. Sheesh, your kids are WAY smarter than mine. :)

Can I just say that I love your family!

Great pics!! My guy found out about the Easter Bunny first too, but I was able to convince him that Santa was real for one more year. *sigh*

I have this tug a war every year should I say or not. Last year my oldest (9 now) found the loot a few days before Easter. I told him not to tell his sister and put it all out like the Easter bunny brought it. I thought things were ruined for sure, but Christmas came and he believed, then the tooth fairy came and I think he believed. This year the Easter bunny came and no one said a word so I don't know if he believes or not. I should just be up front about it. I really hate keeping up this whole cherade, I would rather Easter be spent focused on Christ and his Reserection than on the stupid Easter Bunny.

Angie @ KEEP BELIEVING said...

The Easter Bunny is a difficult concept to grasp and children logically figure this out pretty early, it seems. I am hoping next year mine will figure it out.

KEEP BELIEVING

Jeni said...

Belief in the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus is such a fun thing and yeah, kind of sad too when one does figure it out -the difference between reality and fantasy. But, the fact that he is willing to help to keep that knowledge away from his sisters, to aid and abet with you, I think means he enjoyed the fun of that tradition and wants to see it continued -whether he actually believes or not.
Loved the photos though of the children, matching dresses -so darned cute!

Mom said...

They look absolutely precious!!!!! And the girls matching dresses are to de for, you have an incredibly cute family. How old is Jay again? Because I know I will soon have that discussion too!

ShannanB said...

Sweet pictures. I dont even want to think about SM not believing but I am glad that Jay agreed to not tell the girls --- for legos, lol!

Kelly said...

Beautiful pictures. I love how the light was coming through the window on that second one.

We had snow here too, kind of depressing for Easter!

Wendi said...

Adorable photos of three adorable litle OHMommy's!!!

My older two question or rather "know" what is up with the Easter Bunny... but I have never admitted it. Never actually came right out and agreed. So when they say."OHHH MOM!" I just leave the room or ignore them. I think I am the one with Easter Bunny issues. I know when they have confirmation from me... their childhood is gone. So I am hanging on to what I can.

Lisa said...

Oh.....growing up....I wish they'd get the memo that we're really not ready for them to grow up so quickly!!! Good advice though on how to bribe them into not spoiling it for the younger kiddos....
The pictures really are so cute! I love the girls' dress - almost bought that one at Target!!! Adorable, I tell ya!

Rachel said...

Those pics are gorgeous! Love them!!
So sorry that he's growing up... but I think the real fun is just ahead of y'all. I remember once I 'learned' about Santa, I got to become Santa with my parents.. it was so much fun!! Then, after I would go to bed, 'santa' would still leave me a little something :-) Those are some wonderful memories.

Maria said...

Oh, I love those pictures! When I was growing up, my parents never even mentioned the Easter bunny. There just never was one! I used to go with my mom every year to help pick out the candy. We did believe in Santa, though.

Eve Grey said...

How old is your son? My daughter still believes but I kind-of keep it up becuase I don't want her telling her brothers!

Eve Grey said...

On a side note, I found out about how babies were made at summer camp from a counsellor & somehow figured out from this that there was no Santa, Easter bunny or tooth fairy. I was the most upset about the tooth fairy. Go figure!

Narci D said...

Such cute pictures--and such a smart boy!

Unknown said...

Well at least Santa and the Tooth Fairy are human, so they definitely can shop at Target.

Hope you had a wonderful Easter! And yes I did get some rest last night thanks!

MWAH!

Enchanted!!! I am staring ... scrolling up and down ... totally mesmerized! My Dear Heavens! They are so beautiful! (I love your children!)

You have, yet again, visited the fragrance of loving, respectful, gentle, and sensitive care into the atmosphere of my world. I take deep breaths and say "Thank You!"

My goodness you have one gorgeous family!

Stephanie said...

How beautiful! You are gorgeous children - and I love the matching girly dresses. Maybe someday I can do that - I just need more little ones I suppose ;)

That's a little sad taht Jay knows the truth, but you have a special bond with him now that he keeps the secret from the girls. That's something special in itself too.

Those pics are TOO cute! I love the girls dresses too!

Adorable pics of the little ones. I always told my children that they only got 'stuff' as long as they believe.

My oldest daughter(41) still believes--or at least says she does.

They are beautiful!!! love those dresses! Pleas don't tell him that there is no Santa! He has got to keep beleiving!!!!!

My guess is that he knows about the others, too; he's just figured out how to work the situation to ask for something he thinks he wouldn't get otherwise :)

Personally, I'm thrilled that I don't have to hide it from my girls anymore! Not to mention, get the credit I so rightly deserve :)

I love the pictures--such pretty dresses. I love matching my kids but the oldest is getting quite sick of it!

You should definitely move to the South! With all of our cute and classy (but of course) kiddos, we would be great friends (and a fabulous shopping duo!).

It's so bittersweet when they grow up. But thankfully he didn't ask about anything else yet!

Those pictures are precious. I love big bro's expression toward Fifi. :)

love the outfits and the expressions!!

also love his logic about non-humans shopping at target. how smart is he??

Love the photos... the sisters dresses are precious. I'm like LunaNik's mother... both of my kids have never been told the 'truth' about Santa (14 and 18 - they both still get Santa presents) and this was the first year they didn't get Easter baskets. I'm fighting their growning up as much as I can. =)

girlymom said...

Your pictures are gorgeous, I Love the smiles and seeing how they are interacting together...it's precious! They are dressed so cute too...and handsome!

My oldest questioned the Easter Bunny this year too. I thought she was declaring her knowledge of the truth, but it turns out she still believes, but knows that the Easter Bunny has Helpers. I'll buy that for another year of believing!

Great photos and wonderful story. My 10.5 year old still beleives because he wants to so badly! We had a little HAalloween incident where he asked some of these questions and I got lots of unsolicited blog advice. I think you handled it beautifully and with "class." Happy Easter!

I found you through Tracey's blog. I love your blog. This post was so sweet. I struggle with the "Easter Bunny" because when I found out the truth I was so mad at my parents for lying to me. I still played the part with my kids. My youngest is the only one I play the part for now and when she finds out I hope she doesn't cry like I did. My son is 16 and he flat out thanked me for all the Easter stuff this year. My youngest was standing right there, so she may have already firgured out that it's me. Yikes! I hope you don't mind if I add you to my list of favorites!

That's how it went with my son, too, around the same age. He said, "Mom, I don't think the Easter Bunny is real." Why? "Because there is no way a rabbit could get my basket that high up on the closet shelf." It was about 9 months before the rest of it clicked for him (No Santa, etc.)

Your kids are beautiful!

And, lovely pictures by the way. But, I would expect no less from someone as classy as you.
Love and hugs!

That last picture is adorable. :0) How old is son to not be believing already? How sad! My son is 8 and still believes. I'm glad. I'm not ready for him to be growing up yet.

I LOVE your girls' dresses!

I am really not looking forward to the day my oldest stops believing in Santa, the Easter Bunny, etc. although I totally love how he was all into the secret with mama! :)

Love their Easter outfits! How sad for your son, but great deal you have going. He looks too young. I worry about my 6 year old, he asks too many questions! Today, in fact, he asked how the Easter bunny could be so smart and know everyone's name.

Happy (late) Easter!

Hello!
I just came across your blog. I spent a good hour reading some of your great stories/entries.

Love it!

Love your excellent and honest writing! You have a talent for storytelling.

You also have an adorable family and are a great photographer.

Just wanted you to know. Thanks for being brave enough to put yourself out there. I really enjoyed reading and will look forward to more fun, honest mommy stories.

P.S. My son (6) said the SAME thing about the Easter Bunny going shopping at Target! "Who would wait on him mommy? That can't happen! Where does he get his money"? I love how you handled it!
