My purse. My story.

Last week, at brunch, I observed a new mommy in action. Before sitting down at her table she opened up her gigantic diaper bag and pulled out a high chair cover. She carefully placed her 9 month old son in it, Purelled his hands, and pulled out some colorful gender neutral developmental toys.

Then she sat down. However she never relaxed. Nor did the baby that was overstimulated by all the toys the mommy dumped out of her gigantic diaper bag. The overstimulated baby began to cry and the mother whisked him away in her arms and nervously rocked him. Although, it wasn't so much of a rocking motion it was more of a jitter. The jittered baby started to cry louder and the mom dumped her gigantic diaper bag out to reveal some organic snacks and juices.

We exchanged sympathetic smiles from across the room. I desperately wanted to tell her to relax. Let the baby just be. Let the baby look at your face and play with your necklace. Just relax. However, I couldn't. I was there not too long ago with my first born child. I was a nervous wreck. Becoming a mom and nurturing one child, for me, was a much harder transition then going to two and three children.

When I was pregnant with Jay I spent hours online researching the cutest diaper bag on the market. When he arrived I filled it with colorful toys, organic snacks, two changes of clothes, plenty of bibs, "emergency" bottles, baby Tylenol, extra pacifiers, and I was officially a walking nursery. I felt comfort in being prepared for the unexpected. And everything is unexpected as a new mommy.

Today. I feel seasoned.

Today. I am seasoned. I can tackle the unexpected.

What does a seasoned mom of three carry around in her purse/diaper bag everyday? My sweet and classy friend Jamie challenged me.

This is my purse/diaper bag. It measure nearly 2 feet wide. The BIGGER the bag, the SMALLER I feel. It works magic concealing my muffin top.

Take a peek inside.... This is the epitome of my classy chaos. An unorganized disaster contained within exquisite french leather. There is no method to my madness.

3 diapers, one diaper liner, and an EMPTY box of wipes.

One headband to cover my new bangs I no longer wear down. One un-charged cell phone. One tiny and empty wallet. And a sun glass case carrying my new shades.

One very full and un-used Purell. One empty Eucerin bottle used on Lola's terrible eczema. Three shades of sassy lip gloss. One portable hard drive for the non-profit I edit for. Some kid hair accessories and an empty trial of perfume.

At the bottom of my bag the following items were found....

This is the purse/diaper bag of a mother of three. A seasoned mommy of three.
.
Classy Chaos is now officially a meme graveyard.

I refuse to take a photo of my purse.....maybe...maybe tomorrow...

I am so like you though! I used to be that mom with the diaper bag and the purse. Then it became too annoying. It became too much. It was not me. I now carry an Amy Coe diaper bag as my purse. I LOVE it! IT's HUGE!! It's got my camera, some random mail, doctors bills and orders, diapers, no wipes, change, a bunch of Gerber star puffs, a bag of crayons, my cell on one side, my iPod on the other, change, the baby's growth record book, the handouts from the pediatrician on her latest round of shots, a few feminine hygiene products, two different clinique lipsticks, a chap stick, one pen, and my overstuffed money-less wallet! Occasionally, there is a juice box or sippy cup thrown in, as well!!
I LOVE IT!!

And I still use my cart cover wherever I go but that's because it's totally stylish and I won it and I love it!

Thanks so much for sharing your purse! I think seeing someone's purse is a great way to get to know them. :-)

Plus, this week I have had a hard time thinking of what to write about, and I appreciate you making my Friday easy for me. Yahoo!!

Thanks again, and why are you no longer wearing your bangs down? Did you change your mind?

I love this idea! I'm not on your list...but I am a mom of 3 and I have the Target receipts and a wallet...when I remember, my cell phone. I don't go more than outside of my 5 mile radius from home, so if she poops at the grocery store, we just ditch the cart in an aisle and head home!

Thanks for the homework. I am on it. I think the contents of my purse will look remarkably similiar to yours. Especially the contents on the bottom!

Nice stash you've got there! You're definitely prepared in case of an emergency - or you would be if you went and filled up that wipe container...

Laski said...

Yes, I can see. Clearly seasoned. I am that mom with the diaper bag AND purse--I'm new at this--OBVIOUSLY. I have all the required paraphernalia--a little baggy of wipes, creams, salves, powders, diapers, extra outfit, cloth diapers, chew toys, at least three pacifiers, a first aid kit . . . can ya tell I'm new at this or what? We won't even discuss my purse. I still owe Jamie that pic . . .

I have had my eye on your purse - love it. Mine is spotless...a rarity...only because I had to wait 10 mins in the car for hubby and happened to have a ziploc. I filled a gallon ziploc with the crap in my purse. Today it has a wallet, cellphone, gum, pens, checkbook, and a couple of lollipops from the bank.

Oooh, box of empty wipes... thanks for the reminder, I need to buy more! Now that my daughter's 7, I find my purse is my own again. Aside from some little candies she likes. And the occasional happy meal toy I pick up. And the extra tissues for her nose. And the notebook in case she's bored. Okay, so maybe it's not quite my own yet!

Zoeyjane said...

ooh, i will hand in my homework tomorrow, though i think you'll find it terribly boring. :)

Check your mail. I'll be sending you along some wipes, a phone charger, extra Eucerin, and a bag of Rainbow Goldfish (a big hit around here).

You are darling my friend. Love the bag, the contents, and the girl slinging it over her shoulder.

Too funny...you can always spot the newbies and the vets in parenting by their bag!

For my rst child I carried an entire nursery...for baby 2, less than a year later, I purged a bit since I had to have 2 of everything...and now with # 3, I carry an extra diaper...most of the time!!!!

Thanks for sharing - I am looking forward to seeing what others carry...I may even be brave and participate on my blog!

Thanks for the tag, I'll have to go dig through my purse.

As a classy mother of just one beautiful child, I have to say, my fancy diaper bag has been used once. I too throw everything in a purse and it's a bit chaotic but it works. I usually have a couple diapers and a snack - none of the other stuff though. I also have one wipe in my container when I looked so thanks for the reminder!

I'm glad to know that nothing will have to change whenever we decide to procreate again! :)

Hi OHmommy, this is my first post, but I've been enjoying your blog for a while! :) What a great topic! Not being a mommy yet myself, I can't say for sure what I will do when the day comes regarding the diaper bag situation, but I am pleased to see it's possible to keep it classy and fabulous!

Jolyn said...

Oh my gosh, I knew a woman who also used the exact same classy $$$ diaper bag. Her children were out of diapers when I knew her but she still uses the bag as her most excellent travel purse.

I wasn't on your list because I rarely comment, but I love reading your tales. My diaper backpack, as a mother of three, is also very seasoned. I keep some wipes in a sandwich baggie.

You are SO going to laugh when I do mine (Jamie tagged me but I still haven't done it). Let's just say my purse is half the size and covers all the same bases.

I can so relate to that first time mom. I was a nervous wreck when we went out. I still am. I was at a moms group event the other day and one lady told me to chill out and ignore my son. I think I am just terrified that everyone will be talking about what a brat he is if I let him do anything wrong. Instead, apparently they are talking about what an overbearing nervous wreck I am. Whoops!

My purse/diaper/gym bag is scary. It's got gym gloves, headbands, ipod shuffle, random loose raisins, cheddar bunnies, cereal bars, lots of diapers since the boy only poops when we are out of the house, random Wiggle action figures. . . who knows what else is in the depths.

I had to laugh at that honkin' big bag o' goldfish that fit in there!!!
And I so agree with you about the new mom thing. My sis and SIL are both new moms, they seem to have gotten their rhythm now with their 7 month olds, but there is the odd occasion when I have my inner chuckles.
Thanks for the tag, this one will be fun!!

I'm several years out from the diaper bag stage, but you'd be surprised at how much stuff you still carry around for your kids. Fun meme!

girlymom said...

I will take you up on your challenge, but I have to do it two ways...the little baby stage I am currently in and the normal everyday life once little teeny baby stage is past, this is the small bag with a diaper and a wipe, a wallet and a phone...keys if I can find them!

I used to be the mom with the HUGE diaper bag...store bought baby registered...HUGE. Then as if one HUGE bag wasn't enough I tried for the backpack kind. Turns out that now, with the teeny tiny baby stage, I use the diaper bag from the hospital...Free, not store bought baby registered. Funny how that works!

Have a great weekend!

Junk I don't need and cough drop wrappers and tissue that hasn't been used, but is wadded up and dirty looking. There's a botle of nose spray, a bottle of hand lotion, three bottles of pills and enough chap stick to un-wrinkle the lips of an entire snow skiing team.

And somewhere in that mess is a wallet a checkbook a cell phone and keys to my vehicle, house and office.

But the most important thing in my purse is pictures of my grandchildren. I may not be able to find anything else in there, but I can find those pictures.

LunaNik said...

I observed a mother using a large YSL bag as a diaper bag a couple of years ago. I was childless and marveled at her classiness as we sat across the aisle from each other in our NBA season ticket holder seats for the Sacramento Kings. I never spoke to her, because she was Mike Bibby's fiancee and a bit of a celebrity to me.

I will show off my bag later this week.

Taj said...

Thankyou for writing about your purse.

This is what is in mine:

IT is a nice sized black leather shoulderbag - I forget what type.

Inside it I have:

A very tatty looking wallet/coinpurse containing my cards, assorted notes and some loose change.
My cell-phone and house keys (carkeys are also on the keyring).
2 out of date diaries (one from 2006, one from 2007) - yes there are 2 and yes they are out of date but I NEED those diaries - they have notes, phonenumbers, addresses written in them - I would honestly be lost without them!
Underneath these are an assortment of old screwed up receipts that really should be sorted and either filed or thrown out.
And right at the bottom beneath all this is a small plastic doll, just under $1 in assorted coins, a bottle of rescue remedy, a perfume sample,3 pens, 2 lipsticks and a paperclip

This is the bag of a 38 yr old mother of 4 girls who's ages range from 3yrs up to 9 yrs old

My favorite diaper bags are Anne Taylor/Ann Taylor Loft/Baby Gap/ bags. You know the little shopping bags made out of heavy paper. I LOVE them, as I can fit the essentials. They have heavier handles than a regular shopping bag and they work just fine for me. Then I just carry my wristlet(glorified wallet on a string).

Becoming Mommy said...

De-lurking:
I actualy keep my diaper bag and purse seperate. Because I need to go to the office and keep my purse, but the bag gets left with the baby at Grandma's or Daycare.
My purse is also a breifcase. Phone, PDA, laptop, dayrunner, makeup, spare hose...totally ready for my usual day.
Diaper bag is a huge Eddie Bauer one from Target. A few wipes, maybe 2 diapers, changing pad, desitin, lotion (eczema, it's a necessity), one change of clothes, some strawberry puffs, 1 meal, 1 bottle, and some tylenol. Usually I forget toys and just give him paper cups or something to play with. Sometimes I remember his blankie. I do use the high chair cover and placemats. It's because the minute he sits down, he immediately starts biting both the high chair and the edge of the table. I'm not paranoid on cleanliness, but ew....there's stuck goop of unknown origin.

in mini pocket: BIRTH CONTROL, work ID card, various gift cards, pen, plumper lip gloss, chapstick, keys on TCO hearttag key ring, earrings i have been meaning to get fixed since NYE, tissue, cell phone, blackberry

in the bottom of the bag: hairbrush, 2 checkbooks, travel wine opener (for emergencies), hand cream, diet pills, eye glasses, sun glasses, black quilt 180s, photo wallet with pics of jay and lola and fifi, cash wallet that is full of lots of cc's but no cash (ha!!), water bottle, makeup case with my daily application needs, OH's cereal box (to leave at the office for when i forget to eat brekkers), ipod, freshly charged camera, two hair ties, headband....AND DONE!!

I have 4 kids. By the time I got to the last one, I would run out with a diaper in one hand, and him in another. never prepared. but we always made it through and we're still alove.

I will have to do this challenge. You'll see that I don't look like a mommy at all, if you're just looking at my purse.

Since my boys started potty training I have put extra clothes, undies, and diapers/wipes in the van. Sometimes I don't even take the diaper bag on short trips. They have come in handy more than a few times (especially since I have car sick boys).
