Seriously. What's so special about being blonde?

"Mom?"

"Yes, Lola."

"Take a picture of my hair."

"What did you say girlfriend?'

"Can you please take a picture of my hair, Mama?"

"Why?"

"Because it's blonde."

"Why do you want me to take a picture of your blonde hair?"

"So all the people on the dot com know I have blonde hair." She opened up her arms and waved them all around to narrate the "all."

"Okay, Lola. Okay."

"How is this?" I flipped over my camera to show her the picture.

"Good. Very good. Very very very good."

"So. You really want me to put it on the dot com?"

"Yes, of course, Mama. People should know this news." She dramatically explained and I had to wonder... what's so special about being blonde that you have to blog about it?

A mere two days later....

"Mama?"

"Yes, Lola."

"Why are people in Africa looking at my picture?" She asked me while I was flipping through my sister's online photo album of her pictures from Mali. One of the pictures was of village children looking through my sister's wallet sized family portraits.

"Well. Because you are different from them and you live far away from them. They are curious about you."

"Are they curious because I am blonde?"

"Exactly." I left it at that because her innocence was so sweet and I had no time to explain diversity and cultures just minutes before preschool drop off.

I think that cute Lola would be special no matter WHAT color her hair!

Love that fabulous splash of blonde hair. She is so sweet.

Do you know how many statements I agree to or choose not to argue against because I don't feel like explaining something to my children?! lol

Lola's adorable. And her hair is beautiful. It'd be beautiful even if it were brown or black or red.

OHmommy said...

Thanks ladies. I know, I know... I should take the time and explain that she is special in whatever hair color.

I will add that on my "to-do" list! LOL.

That is some fabulous hair!

I have a feeling I will encounter this someday. Seriously. I know my kids are going to be blond and blue-eyed, despite my Hispanic heritage. Mark my words.... I'll email you a pic in a few years.

Beautiful hair! My Punky is at the age where she has random thoughts like this. Just the other day she says, "Hey, Mommy!" Yes, Punky? "Someday I'm going to go to the supermarket!" Uh, yeah, ok. But it just shows us how their little brains work!

It's because blondes actually DO have more fun.. trust me- I've done the leg work.

..coming from someone who used to be brunette!

That is gorgeous hair!

Very cute conversation.

She probably has the last word and then some. :) Tell her Flea says that being a red head is much more dramatic. Heh. She's still cute, though.

Blondes have more fun, maybe that's it? LOL
I find myself saying "Flipping Frogs" here lately and it's all YOUR fault!

Ehem, I happen to know for a fact that blondes kick butt! She's got beautiful hair - psst, tell her I said so :)

I must toss in that as a redhead, reds rock, but I've seen my blonde daughter.

I think we tie :-)

I love Lola. I want to hug her and you know what, you'll touch on special and different and diversity when you do. You are amazing in your ability to recognize teachable moments, and your ability to recognize let it go moments.

Flaunt it if you've got it baby! And more power to ya if you've got a dot com! hahaha I love that. a dot com. It's like when Fury says "oh dad you have to blog that!"

Rachel said...

She is too cute! And, yes -- I'm sure she always has the last word, no matter the situation.

I love me some Lola! That is great!

There is plenty of time to teach about diversity, right? I would just savor her "Lola-ness!"

I bet the blonde hair looks pretty weird to the people in Africa. I think it is so funny that she talks about it so much. Maybe it is because it is different than your hair color. I don't remember ever thinking about it as a child.

How funny. Isn't so much about being a mommy really just split second editing?

PS, I would kill for those kind of curls.

Hi Classy Mama,

Hi Ohmommy!

I just popped over from Jaina's. How could I not resist coming for a visit, when you left the comment: "Gramma Ann I love you!!

Your little blonde bombshell has lovely hair. Ohmommy! enjoy her now because, in a few years you will find out from her! that you know a little but she knows all...;) Remember when we all thought our moms suddenly didn't know as much as we thought they did. But in time we came around again and realized our Moms had a lot more wisdom then we, and we again went to them for advice!! Funny isn't it how our viewpoints change over time...

Enjoyed my visit and will be on my way to make some more morning visits elsewhere.

Have a classy dot.com happy day.

Gramma Ann ;)

I am trying with all my might not to be jealous of all that gorgeous blonde hair. I just don't think it would be as easy for me to pull off as Nice and Easy 116!

She is adorable. And blonde. My goodness. Perhaps she will grow to be the anti-Jessica Simpson.

Lola's hair is beautiful no matter what color. I like this post. I love the African Children looking at the picture. They are beautiful too!

Kelly said...

I'm glad she loves her blonde hair. I've always wished I had dark hair, go figure!

Jeni said...

How true it is that kids generally do seem to get the last word in! Probably because a lot of what they say tends to leave us without a comeback for a while!
Love Lola's perceptions of the hair, nail polish and what she will take to visit Africa.

Courtney said...

She sure does love being blonde. I really hope her hair doesn't change as she gets older. It would be devastating for her.

Caroline C. Bingham said...

It's a blond thing.

Besides, everyone knows all the good princesses are blond. It's just a historical fact. Cinderella... Aurora... Rapunzel... I mean, if that's not fool proof I don't know what is.

Goodness I would pay good money to get that amazing color..

Lola is too sweet..

She is so sweet....I guess she thinks blondes have more fun....or she just wanted to do something to get on the "dot com"....

:) and yet my daughters' thing right now is finding and telling more dumb blonde jokes. Can you guess what color hair we have?

That is too cute! I lived in a remote village in Kenya for a few months in college...people would walk for miles to come see the "white girl." I was apparently more magical to the village children than the local WITCH DOCTOR! Hello!

Let's hope she keeps those blond curls b/c they are adorable.

She does have gorgeous hair. I guess the saying, "blonde's have more fun" starts at a REALLY young age!

That is cool. I love when they can't notice differences. Or when the differences don't matter to them.

I was talking about my son's fencing instructor being from Russia and he said "How do you know he's Russian?" And I said, baffled "From his strong accent! And the fact that his name is Sergei..." To which he said: "Accent? What accent?"

Love it.

Curiousity and beauty, the perfect combination anywhere in the world - I love that you have pictures from both sides of the globe.

MommyTime said...

She is so funny! I love that she's decided there's something about herself that she wants to be proud of. But even more, I love that the picture she chose as perfect is just a picture of a fall of hair, with no face. It really is just the hair she adores. So cute and innocent.

Colleen - Mommy Always Wins said...

Little girls are so cute and funny - she'd probably want you to take a picture of her hair, no matter WHAT the color. Soon it'll probably be whatever special shoes she's loving right now, or special sparkly stickers...you get the idea...

Cecily R said...

Well, I for one am very glad she let us in on that news.

And if I had that head of hair I'd be splashing it all over the dot com too!!

Aw! That is too sweet. And that she calls your blog "dot com" is just adorable.

*She* is just adorable. And one day you'll have time to explain diversity and cultures to her, and I'm sure you will do it well!

I love how innocent kids are. She would feel the same way if her hair was brown, black or green.
Madeline told me that she wanted her new baby sister to have brown skin and black hair in little rows. I was a little sad to tell her that was not what her sister would look like.
How is your sis? She hasn't posted lately. (like I have room to talk about that!)

I love the hair - it's gorgeous (and thankfully, she KNOWS that!!) and very blonde!! I have a few blondies in my house and, yes, somehow they seem to feel being blonde is pretty cool, lol.

I hear ya on the explanation - I never thought I'd do stuff like (you know, before I was a mommy!) that but I certainly have . . . all the time!! The unending questions wear me down sometimes, so I'm forced to submit to my own spinning head some days and just give the simple answer.

Unknown said...

Oh sweet Lola, just makes my heart melt! So sweet...

tiarastantrums said...

too bad she's not a redhead!(smiles)

At least she enjoys being what she is, I grew up wanting black hair. I finally figured out that it's better to just enjoy what you got. The kids in Africa looking at her reminded me of my brother showing people pictures of me (as a teenager) and my siblings to the people in Guatemala. He said one guy took a look at my picture, took it and said to him, "Thanks, brother in law!"

Jaina said...

She's got some beautiful blonde hair. I wanted to be blonde when I was little, but now I love my brunette head. :)

Aww, cute! Too funny... I had super pale blonde hair as a little kid!
