Suburbia is tweeting awesome.

Last May, after a long weekend living it up in Manhattan with my sister and children, I came home to Ohio and started to search for apartments in NYC's Upper West Side. Preferably by the macaroni and cheese cafe that helped fill out my Hudson jeans. Yum.

I love cities. But life in suburbia can be exciting.

Last week, after mommy and me gym class (otherwise known as the suburban country club for new moms), Fifi spotted a wild turkey in our front yard pecking away at our organic lawn fertilizer and she chased it through three neighboring yards screaming, "I wanna to TOUCH it. I wanna to TOUCH it." I lured her home by promising a turkey sandwich on organic wheat bread.

And yesterday. Well. Yesterday was pretty exciting too. A congregation of twelve geese stubbornly sat in the puddles of our cul-de-sac and my husband unleashed our Dachshund on them. Good times.

Today. Today, for sure, was the highlight of our month.

We noticed a nest in the wreath that hangs on our front door 18 days ago and since then the kids have been religiously checking it each morning for changes.

And each morning we notice the changes. "The birds opened their eyes." "Today they have feathers!" "I wanna to TOUCH it. I wanna to TOUCH it." The three kids observe while devouring their poptarts with their noses pressed against the storm door.

Today we royally pissed off Mama Robin, who was never a calm soul to begin with. With my kid's three noses pressed against the glass we watched as Mama Robin flapped her wings frozen in mid air dropping F bombs left and right "Tweet. Tweet. Tweeeet, tweeeet, TWEET!" We watched as each one of her four Baby Robins fell out of the nest being rudely disturbed by Fifi's head slamming against the glass for a better view. Each one fell and Mama Robin dropped another bomb, "TWEET!"

Mama Robin is one of those uber over-protective mothers that goes far and beyond the neccessary duties of motherhood to keep her babies safe. As she kept on tweeting away left and right we noticed that each one of her plump and ready-to-leave-the-nest babies begin to flap their wings. One was slower. One was more gracefully. One was a natural and flew to the highest branch. And one... well, one was too plump to even move.

"The tweeting cat is outside!" My husband screamed.

The kids' breaths were steaming up the glass. Their sweaty palms leaving greasy finger prints on the beveled glass. Their eyes wide open as they watched our kitten pounce on the plumpiest Baby Robin. Before the kitten could attack again the husband a huge Animal Planet dork crouched down in the organic green lawn of the suburbs and whisked him away in one gentle arm swoop saving the greediest of Mama Robin's kin.

"I wanna to TOUCH it!" Fifi broke the heavy silence.

Good times people. Good times in the suburbs. You will love life in suburbia Kelcey. This weekend we are going to a parade right out of the portraits of Norman Rockwell with processions of hunting hounds and miniature ponies. We are all bursting in anticipation.

Well let's be thankful that none of your children's first words were "Tweet!"

Thanks for the giggle. Actually it was a good laugh!

Oh my word! I'm just so glad the cat didn't eat the little bird.

It will live to tweeting tweet another day.

You are so funny. Great descriptions. I grew up in the country, and I hate that Hailey doesn't get half of the animal experiences that I did growing up.

oh, Kelcey will definitely want to touch it!

honest to God, I had to read this post three times to clarify whether or not Kelcey was going to Ohio or you were coming to NYC for a hunt. Sheesh. I should go back to bed. PS, I *AM* coming to Ohio this weekend!!!

Oh, that is too much!

The big city is definitely overrated!

Animal Planet dork? Knight in shining armor, I say! Gripping story - I so glad to hear that no baby birds were killed by the cat. That would not have fit into the Norman Rockwell image at all.

Too late, I rated it already. In fact, I was going to enter the contest but decided not to after seeing your adorable video!

And another thing...so nice to see the word tweet used the "old-fashioned way" :)

OMG. What a perfect looking nest. Birds in Ohio are NORMAL, compared to birds in California, who make their nests in empty porch light cases.

I felt a real connection to this post, seeing as how I was on Twitter with you when it was going on! I'm glad it worked out OK and your husband is a peach. :-)

This is tweeting awesome!

There is something just inherently funny about your luring your daughter away from the wild turkey with a turkey sandwich.

That photo of the robins made my day, truly. Just beautiful, and a well told story too.

Love your description of the birds and all the "Tweets." Yes, suburbia can be fun as well.

Did I read that right? Am I supposed to rate the video a l and NOT a 5? I already voted from the office, but can still vote from the home computers. I just want to make sure I'm doing it correctly. I hope you win!

Your kids will NEVER forget this day- what a great thing for them to be able to witness... especially since it didn't include watching the cat devour one of the baby birds... good job hubby!

I'm glad the baby birds were okay!

Surburia or Country life, what ever you want to call it is the PERFECT life I say! I can't imagine my kids growing up any other way.
