Desperate Housewives of the Midwestern Tundra

The rule of thumb, in the OHmommy family, is that once the temperature reaches 50 dry degrees we head outside.

Finally. We reached 50 blissful degrees on Monday and the sun was shinning brightly outside. I gathered up the kiddos for our daily bike ride around the hood.

"Mama! Mama!!!" Jay yells, well ahead of us, on his bike.

"Yes, handsome?" I pick up speed and try to catch up. Fifi is happily kicking her feet in the stroller. I smile. Oh. My. Gosh. We are outside and the air feels beautiful. The sun is incredible. I am smiling.

"Mama! You need to call the news. This is VERY IMPORTANT." Jay informs me.

I catch up to him. I look to the left. I look to the right. "What? What is so very important?" I am confused.

"This is so important." He stops and throws his hands dramatically on his hips. "Someone needs to call the weatherman to tell him that it feels like summer out here!"

He smiles. I smile. Fifi kicks her feet again. I take out my cell phone from my ski jacket and pretend to dial. "Hello? Yes. Hi. We are outside in Ohio and it feels like summer here. The sun is out. The birds are singing. We are riding our bikes. And. And. And the snow is melting. Okay. Thank you. Have a GREAT day."

We continue our bike ride smiling the entire way home.

Us Midwesterners can appreciate the seasons changing. Man do we appreciate it. Goodbye old man winter. 50 degrees sure does feel like summer. No April Fool's joke here.

Baseball in the muddy yard? Sure. Clean out the garage? Why not? Give the dog a bath with the hose? Okie doke.

Amazing the things that are suddenly "fun" on that teaser day of sunshine, which could be the last one we see here in Ohio until May.

McMommy said...

could you send some of that 50 degree weather down south?! We are sweating up a storm down here and could use a little cool down!

Karen MEG said...

It's raining cats and dogs here; but at least we're getting into the double digits celsius tomorrow! I think the snow should be gone by midday. Not out of the woods yet, but we should have spring by the end of April, just in time for summer!

Your boy is so cute - very important news indeed!

Love that last picture. Now if it was 50 degrees and: sunny, snowy, rainy, haily (is that a word?), sunny, cloudy, snowy again within a 30 min stretch? Then you know you were in the NW!

Rhea said...

Great pictures! Too funny you're posting about it feeling like summer and there's snow on the ground. When it hits 50's here, we decide that's cold enough to light a fire! lol

Anonymous said...

you take such beautiful pictures! I tried that picnik website you were talking about and it's awesome, but it doesn't save my pictures from being terrible... maybe I need a new camera ;)

You are such a great mom...when my boy gets older I am so worried about being able to just play with him. I would have never thought to pretend to call the news! Ah! Is there a How to be a Mom class I can take somewhere?!

I love that 50 feels like summer to you! And I'm glad you all had a nice day.

Oh gosh, how I would love 50 degrees. We've already topped 90 and I am NOT happy about it. 50 sounds wonderful to me, too!

Zoeyjane said...

we had a bout of summer teaser here today, too. i was only wearing a tank top, a teeshirt and a hoody. my coat was hanging off of my stroller. and today, my freckles came out. how about yours?

Kristen said...

So glad to hear that the midwestern weather is starting to look up. There is definitely something to be said for soaking up some fresh air with the kiddos.

Make sure to tell that weather man, while you are on the phone, that some blue skies and more 50+ days would be nice for the rest of the week. :-)

By the way, the ears on Fifi's hat are just too cute!

Danielle said...

Oh I should just shut up but I fired up the heater today because I didn't want to put on a sweater in the house. Or even a long sleeve shirt. I would NEVER survive in the Midwest.

The pictures are awesome though. I hope it stays above 50 for you guys and Old Man Winter is kicked to the curb!

MommyTime said...

Oh, yes, we do appreciate the weather. I went running in a tank top on Tues -- spoke to my best friend on the phone in Atlanta -- she was wearing a wool dress and boots and couldn't get warm, was delighted her neighbor was making a bonfire -- it was exactly the same temperature there are it was here!

Mamarazzi said...

you poor ppl who live in the snow. i could never survive, y'all AMAZE me.

love love LOVE the pics...way too cute!!

You are the best mom ever --- so glad you made the call! What a cute little man you have!

I am with you when it starts to warm I kick everyone out of the house for some much needed fresh air! Hope it continues to warm up for you!

Enjoy your warm weather! I hope it continues for you.

That sounds so sweet .. and hard for me to imagine. 50 degrees is considered a cold day where we live, and I have only seen snow twice in my life. My kids have NEVER seen it.

We're supposed to hit 60 today but al rain and thunderstorms! Still, I'll take 60 any way I can get it!

Krystyn @ Really, Are You Serious? said...

Did you send your weather here? It's still only in the 40s and it's April...in Georgia.

I'm calling the weather man and telling him to send Ohio their weather back!

Unknown said...

How cute is THAT! I LOVE when kids come up with that stuff. So innocent, so sweet, and so freaking HONEST! And I have to tell ya, I was born and raised in Ohio, and while I do remember those days, (as a child, I left when I was 21 and have never been back) I can't imagine thinking it's summer when there is STILL snow on the ground! I used to miss it, but not sure I do anymore! LOL

50 is definitely the magic number!

Sue said...

Northwestern PA is the same. We all come out to play when the mercury climbs past 50!

Yesterday when I picked Madeline up from school, she had taken off her hoodie and her jacket and was running around in short sleeves and a skirt and tights. The wind was slightly warm even if the sun was hiding behind a cloud.
This morning as we walked to school we admired the buds on our lilac bushes and saw a bird pull a worm out of the wet grass. Yes, it is finally spring.

Lisa said...

It got up to 60 here yesterday afternoon. I thought about wearing my flip flops....

Cute pics of the kiddos on the bikes. You've got me thinking about getting Miss Goosey a bike for her big 4th birthday that is this month!!!

Unknown said...

love it how the little one wanted you to call the weatherman to say that. so cute the things the little ones say sometimes :)

i am loving the sun right now in anchorage! great day, kathleen :)

Beth from the Funny Farm said...

Wow! You still had snow! We have no snow here in Western PA.. and I AGREE... it is GREAT to be outside!!

Anonymous said...

That's totally adorable. There's still SNOW?? And, of course, being MUCH further south, 50 for me means bundling up in heavy coats & NOT thinking of setting foot outside. I love the perspective!

Kelly said...

We actually hit 60 yesterday but had thunderstorms and horrible wind so we couldn't enjoy it. Today the high will hit a balmy 47! No April Fool either. Gotta love fickle spring weather!

Maria said...

That's the weather we had yesterday, too! We went to the park to pick up garbage! Then we played some basketball. Today the weather is supposed to drop, though:(

Texasholly said...

I love the bike picture.

I grew up in Lincoln, NE where we were at the park laying out if it reached 60 degrees--no joke. Now that my blood has thinned in Texas, 60 degrees still means winterwear to me!

I am so glad things are warming up there.

Flea said...

Oh YAY!!!! Enjoy your lovely weather!

GoMommy said...

Love the pictures! I've been waiting for spring! I think it's starting! Yea!

Unknown said...

I know! Isn't it great! Too bad it got all gloomy all over again :(

Anyhow, I am so ready for those barbecues we talked about!

Ashlee said...

It's supposed to get to 50 degrees here this week too! Yahoo! Our snow melted about a month ago, but it's still been cold, and it has still snowed. Thankfully, it just didn't stick! Whew! Not a snow lover here. I'm so ready for the daily bike rides. So is my daughter!

Lizzy in the Burbs said...

Yay for Spring!! Looks like things were a little sloshy, but fun! Great photos!

it feels so good to see the light! Glad you guys are outside enjoying the weather! It is 63 degrees here today. WOW! I am so excited for spring!

Someone Being Me said...

Wow, that is funny. In Texas we would consider a high of 50 and snow on the ground the dead of winter. It is supposed to be 86 here today. We are skipping spring and heading straight to summer.

AutoSysGene said...

Boy do I hear you! Yesterday was 61 degrees! I wanted to get my bathing suit out!!;)

Consider yourself tagged!

Amy said...

That's awesome! I won't tell you it's 83 here today. And you can come on down to the beach house whenever you want ;-)

I will take 50 degrees and sunny over 70 degrees and hail any day!
Happy you had fun!

Stephanie said...

I don't know how you guys stand it up North. I'm amazed at all the snow on the ground in Chicago right now. In my Houston, it was 82 and sunny yesterday! And I'm here wearing a coat! Oh my...

Glad you got to enjoy some "summer" though!

mamatulip said...

I'd much rather hear about a 50-degree day on the news than some of the other stories I read. Jay's got a point!

oh sooo very true!! 50 is like beach weather here in kansas :) yeah i know we don't have a beach, but maybe if we piled up all the sand from the winter sand trucks, we could pretend?? oh wait - there is no sand left!!

love the pictures!!

Stephanie said...

How sweet! It's been in the 60s and 70s here, so we're enjoying the beautiful weather, too! And by the way, I'm baaaaack!!!! Our new internet provider stinks, so I've been trying to blog all day myself and I haven't been able to. ARGH! Glad to hear life went on while I was away! ;oD

Our robins came back just in time for another blast of winter. Today it's low 30's and snow. 50 sounds like a heat wave!

I feel your winter pain. Michigan is starting to smell like spring too! Yeay! Love your pics BTW!

50 degrees. Psssh. I think we might've hit that today, but it.is.raining. You should call the sun and tell him to stop hibernating, please.

Awesome pics! Can't wait to get out and break in the new triple stroller myself.

Still cold and rainy here in Boston, but you have given me hope. Great pictures!

I guess that the April Fools is on us, 6" of snow April 1st? Come on. We Minnesotans are tough, we are out when it's 30 degrees, including today. I 'guess' that feels like Spring to us...

Wendi said...

I was sure I left a comment last night... but can't find it.
It is my "half-timers" acting up again.

Love the photos! I am glad the OHMommy family had a nice day for a bike ride. Very classy ride Miss Fifi!!!

In southern OH it is a whopping 68 degrees. A nice windy day . . . Lovin' it!

As a Midwesterner, 50 degrees is down right balmy . . .

I couldn't agree with you more...it should be close to 50 degrees here on Thursday! I can't wait!

Great pictures! Spring days are the best. {glad you called the weather man LOL}

That summed up the weather in Indiana. Fabulous isn't it?

The hubs and I swear we will leave here someday and move to a warmer location. Nothing like going from 60 to 20 degrees in 24hours! It may snow, it may ice, it may flood, the sun just might shine...basically the weather man can’t even predict it. lol

LunaNik said...

Well I see you still have snow on the ground over there in Ohio. No snow here babe. And it's been so warm there is no need for jackets. Yee Haw. Move to Jersey my dearest OhMommy and summer will come that much quicker. Promise.

Victoria said...

LOL! Reminds me of my days in upstate NY! Wearing shorts when it hit 45!!

And that, my friend, is why I moved south. Come visit.
