I realized. Wearing too much lipstick makes you look three years older

"Why don't you pick out the most fanciest dress you have?"

"Because. Well... then I would be the most beautiful girl there and I don't want to make all of my girlfriends jealous." She replied.

She dressed herself in what she thought was a simple dress and took my hand leading me to my closet. "I want you to look fancy for my Mother's Day Ice Cream Social. Can I pick out your outfit?"

"Of course, gorgeous."

She skipped over the dozen little black dresses and picked something "more happy" for me to wear and I smiled at my most awesome intuition. All of my old bridesmaids/prom dresses in teal, bubble gum pink, and lavender were safely hidden in the basement. She smiled when she saw me. I realized I don't wear enough color for my children.

Hand in hand, just the two of us together, we walked into her preschool classroom. "Why are you taking a picture of my picture, Mama?"

"Because. It totally makes me smile and I never want to forget it." I realized I take way too many photos.

She drew a picture of me. I realized I wear too much lipstick.

And filled out a questionnaire about me. I realized I aged 3 years and grew blue eyes.

At the end of the night, when I looked into her big brown eyes still racing with excitement, I realized that I don't wear enough color, take too many photos, wear too much lipstick which apparently ages me three years, and most importantly I realized that one-on-one time with each child is desperately necessary. She was on cloud nine. As was I.

You are both beautiful, too much lipstick or not! ; )

I'm loving the idea of an ice cream social. Think I need to suggest that at my kids' school (wink, wink!)

And *gasp* take too many photos?!!? I don't understand.

I love one on one time with my boys but as I'm sure you know, with three kiddos it is hard to pull off. It is so special when we do though. Sounds like you two had an awesome time. I had to LOL at Lola's picture with the raincoat and hat. Too cute!

Awww-that is so sweet. I remember those days when my older 2 would do those questionnaire's...hold onto those, great memories.

OH gosh, how very sweet and adorable! She is so beautiful, and you look great too! A Mother's Day Ice Cream Social? I cannot wait until my kids are in school! I am so looking forward to all those types of fun events.

And it's so great when you get one on one time with your children. They need it as much as we do!

Awww...Lola telling it like it is. Kidding.

How special that you got that one on one time with her.

It sounds like the perfect kind of Mommy Daughter date.

Incidentally, Gracie filled out one of those questionnaires for me once and I was in my 70s and weighed 47 pounds. Neat.

I was hoping we'd get to see Lola's fashion choice (she did a great job BTW). Color is a GOOD thing.

Her portrait of you (in all your magnificant red lipstick) had me LOL. It's so sweet to see her impressions of momma.

Now I need to figure out how to schedule alone time with each of my own children.

So sweet!! I never realized how important mother's day is in the States as it's my first one here in the last 6 years! In fact, my munchkin has a luncheon on Friday - and has been giddy about it for the past week.

Love the photo of the two of you - it's too darn cute.

Stephanie said...

Beautiful dress! Quality time is SO important...you're such a good mommy!

Flea said...

Awww! What great realizations. Also realize that most kids her age would give their parents many more than three years. The lipstick probably makes you younger.

Tara R. said...

Oh, my... her answers to the survey made me all teary... so very sweet. You both look lovely in your 'tea party' attire.

That's so sweet. My daughter said her momma was special today because she has her fave color on her new shirt!!!

I love those preschool "socials" so much! I am really going to miss that next year when my baby is in kindergarten! :(

BTW, you both look beautiful.

One on one time is so important, isn't it? These are moments that you both will treasure for years to come. They are wonderful little daily miracles - spending time with the people you love most and recognizing it for the wonderful moment it is. Hooray for you!

Jessica said...

So sweet! That is so wonderful that you got to have a special moment with Lola. She'll talk about it forever. And you both look smashing!

Marinka said...

I love that photo of the two of you. And I love how she chose a beautiful white dress for herself.

I LOVE that one-on-one time. I covet it desperately. Aging 3 years to get it is definitely worth it.

But you have to admit, she totally nailed it with the shopping part...

I love the pictures! All of them!

I understand the black issue as I often wear that colour too.

The dress she picked was great, and your portrait too, I guess she emphatizes your lipstick not because you put too much but because she does not wear it at all, so she realizes there's a difference between your lips and hers.

I find so funny you've grown up blue eyes!

:o)

They make you realize the most amazing things in such innocent ways. I love one on one time, it is so special for both!

ah, there you go making me cry this morning.
beautiful memory. glad you captured it.
husband noted that i took over 400 pictures while he was gone for 3 days. there is a funny line between too many and not enough. i'd rather err on the side of too many but still leaving me enough time to be in the moment.

tracey.becker1@gmail.com said...

:) I love those things. Happy Mother's Day! You looked beautiful, and not too made up no matter what she says...

Briya said...

LOL. Maybe her picture was interpretive? It was nice, either way.

I realized that maybe I was going out when my daughter wrote my mom likes little black dresses. Ouch

That one on one time is so important. I totally agree. Recently my son painted pictures of me and my husband. He gave his daddy ENORMOUS eyebrows. I almost fell over laughing. It's funny what they notice.

What a great dress she picked out. I am pretty sure my 10 year old stepdaughter would put me in jeans, a nightgown, heels, and a suit jacket. She's suggested that outfit to me before.
